Is a 3D scan enough to reproduce a machine part?
Usually not. A scan is a valuable measurement source, but it records the surface that exists today. It does not by itself tell you the intended tolerance, fit, material, heat treatment, surface finish or which dimensions control function.
What does a scan do well?
It captures complex freeform geometry, relative feature positions and surfaces that are slow to measure manually. It can provide an excellent reference for CAD reconstruction.
What information is missing from the point cloud?
Design intent. A mesh does not tell you whether a bore was H7, whether a shaft was hardened, whether a face requires a specific roughness, or whether a measured deviation is intentional, manufactured variation or wear.
What turns scan data into a manufacturing package?
Engineering interpretation, parametric CAD where appropriate, functional dimensions, tolerances, material and treatment requirements, drawing notes and an inspection plan.
